Email for AI agents: AgentMail and four alternatives
Give an agent its own inbox, connect an existing mailbox, or build on an email API. Five providers and a practical trial to choose between them.
An agent that needs its own address has a different problem from an assistant reading your Gmail. Start there. AgentMail and OpenMail provide agent inboxes; Nylas offers both connections to existing mailboxes and dedicated Agent Accounts. Resend and Postmark are useful when email is an input or output of an application you already operate.
For a small team, our starting shortlist is AgentMail for a new agent identity, Nylas Connect for an existing employee mailbox, and your current transactional provider when you mainly need to process replies. OpenMail is a direct inbox alternative to test alongside AgentMail. These are architectural fits, not a ranking of deliverability or uptime.
Five providers, three different jobs
| Provider | What you get | What your application still owns |
|---|---|---|
| AgentMail | API-created inboxes with messages, threads, attachments, and events | Agent behavior, approvals, business records, and recovery |
| OpenMail | Dedicated agent addresses, arrival events, and sender rules | Workflow state, escalation, and validating parsed content |
| Nylas | Connect for existing mailboxes; Agent Accounts for dedicated identities | Selecting the product and access model, plus approval policy |
| Resend | Sending, inbound email APIs, webhooks, and agent tooling | Mapping messages and replies to your application’s work |
| Postmark | Transactional sending and inbound email delivered as JSON | Conversation state, routing, and the agent loop |
AgentMail: give an agent an inbox of its own
AgentMail treats the inbox as a resource you create through an API. This fits an agent that needs to receive supplier replies, collect documents, or stay reachable under its own identity. The infrastructure provides email; your application decides what the agent is allowed to do with it.
The inbox documentation describes messages, threads, attachments, and inbox-scoped API keys. A scoped key is worth testing with two synthetic customers: the key for customer A must not read customer B’s inbox. Provisioning a separate address alone does not establish that the credentials are isolated.
Published plans, checked October 12, 2026, include a free tier with three inboxes and 3,000 emails per month. Developer is $20 per month with ten inboxes, 10,000 emails, 10 GB of storage, and ten custom domains. Confirm how your expected inbound and outbound volume, attachments, and additional inboxes affect the bill before choosing a plan.
One operational detail deserves attention: AgentMail documents that pausing an inbox stops inbound delivery as well as sending, and mail arriving during the pause is not replayed when you resume. If your goal is to stop an agent from replying while keeping incoming mail, test an application-level send gate or narrower permissions instead of assuming “pause” is a queue.
Our AgentMail catalog entry links to the underlying product references. We have not independently measured its inbox placement or recovery performance.
OpenMail: another dedicated inbox candidate
OpenMail catalog entry: features, pricing, and source references
OpenMail documents per-agent addresses, webhook and WebSocket delivery, sender allow/block rules, and attachment extraction. Its OpenClaw integration offers on-demand, notification, and autonomous response modes. Those modes are useful distinctions: receiving a message need not authorize sending a reply.
Trial it with the same document-collection task as AgentMail. Compare the raw attachment with the extracted text, especially amounts, dates, and tables. Test the configured sender policy and whether a failed handler can recover the message. Treat the advertised capabilities as things to verify, rather than assuming one vendor’s feature name implies the same behavior as another’s.
Set the defaults deliberately. The OpenClaw integration defaults to channel mode, which replies in the thread; choose notify or tool mode for a supervised pilot. Sender filtering permits unblocked mail by default. Denied inbound messages are dropped without a bounce or quarantine, with a rejection event in history. If your workflow needs a human review queue, design and test that separately.
Nylas: choose between a connected mailbox and Agent Accounts
Nylas catalog entry: features, pricing, and source references
Nylas Connect’s Email API reads, searches, sends, and manages messages across providers such as Gmail and Microsoft 365. A grant represents an authenticated connection to a user’s mailbox. This is the appropriate starting point when an assistant needs the employee’s existing conversations and address.
Nylas also documents Agent Accounts for agent-owned email and calendar identities. Include that product in a dedicated-inbox shortlist when the workflow also needs scheduling. Ask for the pricing and limits of the specific product being evaluated; a connected human mailbox and a newly provisioned agent account are different purchasing units.
For an existing-mailbox pilot, begin with draft creation and an explicit human send step. Test revoked access and the wrong-account case. For a dedicated account, test provisioning, conversation continuity, and deletion. Do not let a successful login stand in for those checks.
Resend: a useful option when your application owns the conversation
Resend catalog entry: features, pricing, and source references
Resend supports inbound email as well as sending. It can receive on a provided address or your domain and notify your application through a webhook. Its official MCP server also exposes received-email operations. Describing Resend as “send-only” would miss a relevant option.
This is a sensible candidate when you already have a customer record, a support case, or an invoice workflow and want email to feed that application. Keep an explicit mapping between the incoming message, the customer, and the pending task. Test retrieval of the message body and attachments after an event arrives; do not assume the notification itself contains everything the model needs.
Budget for both directions. Resend counts sent and received mail, and multiple To, Cc, or Bcc recipients count separately. The free transactional plan has no overage and a 100-email daily limit; a conversation with several recipients can use more allowance than its message count suggests.
Postmark: structured inbound for an existing service
Postmark catalog entry: features, pricing, and source references
Postmark’s inbound webhook parses incoming mail into JSON. Its payload includes message content and attachments, with fields such as a mailbox hash for routing. The sample workflow shows how an email reply can become an action inside your application.
Consider it if the service already sends transactional email and you want an agent to classify or draft responses to replies. You still need a durable record of the task and whether a response was approved. A webhook parser cannot decide whether a supplier’s changed bank details should update your payment system.
Check the receiving plan before budgeting. Postmark lists inbound processing on Pro and Platform; Pro is listed at $16.50 per month for 10,000 emails as of October 12, 2026. Confirm which incoming and outgoing messages count toward your allowance.
A first workflow worth testing: collect a missing invoice
Use two mailboxes you control and an invented invoice. Ask the agent to request the missing document, associate the reply with the correct request, extract the invoice number and amount, and prepare a summary for approval. Keep payment and customer-record changes outside this first trial.
- Create or connect the test mailbox. Record its owner and the exact credential scope.
- Send one approved request with a durable task ID stored in your application. Save the provider’s message and thread identifiers.
- Receive a reply with an attachment. Verify the event using the provider’s documented mechanism before accepting it.
- Store the event durably, then process it. Replaying the same event must not cause a second reply.
- Review the extracted invoice against the attachment. Send only after approval; record the final provider result.
AgentMail publishes separate guides for webhook verification and idempotent requests. Check the equivalent contract for your chosen provider. Persist your own task state as well: a provider’s request-deduplication window is not an indefinite business record.
Test failures that a successful demo hides
| Test | Required behavior | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| The same webhook arrives twice | Processes one business action and sends at most one reply | Event ID, task state, and outbound message ID |
| Two customers use the same subject | Keeps their tasks and attachments separate | Inbox, account, and conversation mapping |
| A message requests broader access | Treats the request as message content, not new authority | Blocked action and human escalation |
| An attachment cannot be parsed | Reports the failure instead of inventing a value | Original file and an explicit extraction result |
| A send times out | Checks status or safely retries without duplicate delivery | Provider response and retry history |
| An operator stops the agent | Prevents new sends while preserving the intended intake behavior | Send gate, queue state, and incoming-mail result |
Email and attachments are untrusted inputs. Keep credentials out of prompts, limit recipients during the pilot, and route consequential changes to a human. A sender allowlist reduces exposure but does not make every message from an allowed address safe to obey. Use the permissions guide to define which actions the email agent can take.
What would make us pay?
Count completed conversations, not emails emitted. For this pilot, success means the correct invoice reached the correct task with no duplicate reply and no unsupported extraction. Record setup time, model usage, email and storage charges, manual corrections, and recovery time. Compare two providers on that same result before expanding the workflow.
For a new address, start with AgentMail and OpenMail; include Nylas Agent Accounts if a calendar is part of the job. For an employee’s existing mail, investigate Nylas Connect or the mailbox provider’s own API. For replies inside an existing application, evaluate Resend or Postmark before adding another system. Keep the shortest shortlist that tests the decision you actually face.
